Best PIM for Shopify (2026): 7 Options Compared

The best PIM for Shopify depends on three things: how many products and variants you sell, how many channels besides Shopify you feed, and who will run the PIM. This guide compares seven options.

For each one, it covers how it connects to Shopify, who it suits, and how it is priced. It also explains when you do not need a PIM at all.

Disclosure: Credencys is a Pimcore Strategic Partner and a Syndigo partner. We also work with Akeneo, Salsify, and inRiver as independent consultants. We have tried to describe every option fairly, including the ones we do not sell.

Do You Need a PIM for Shopify at All?

You probably do not need one yet if you have a few hundred products, one store, and one language. Shopify’s product editor, metafields, and a bulk-edit app will cover you, and a PIM would add cost and another system to learn.

You probably need a PIM when two or more of these are true:

  • You have thousands of SKUs, or products with many attributes and variants.
  • Product data comes from an ERP, suppliers, or several internal teams.
  • You sell on Shopify Plus marketplaces, retailers, B2B portals, or print catalogs.
  • You run several Shopify stores, markets, or languages.
  • Launches slip because content is incomplete, or approvals happen in spreadsheets and email.

If that sounds like your business, the question is no longer whether you need a PIM, but which PIM best fits your Shopify setup.

What Shopify Can and Cannot Do on Its Own

Shopify is an excellent commerce platform, but it was built to sell products, not to manage product information across a business. The gaps usually show up in the same places:

  • Options and variants: a product can have at most three options (e.g., size, color, and material), and the number of variants per product is capped. See Shopify’s own guide to product variants.
  • Metafields without workflow: metafields hold extra data, but they lack inheritance, an approval step, or completeness checks.
  • Bulk edits by CSV: large changes mean exporting, editing, and re-importing spreadsheets.
  • Translations without review: translation apps and the translation API work, but no review step happens before content goes live.
  • Separate catalogs per expansion store: each Shopify Plus expansion store keeps its own products, so you have to make the same change several times.

A PIM closes these gaps: you model any number of attributes, enrich and approve content in one place, and publish only finished products to Shopify and every other channel. We cover the technical side in our guide to Shopify PIM integration.

The 7 Best PIM Options for Shopify

Here are the seven options we see most often in Shopify projects, from enterprise platforms to apps that live inside Shopify.

1. Pimcore: Best PIM for Shopify Stores With Complex Catalogs

  • Best for: complex catalogs, B2B and B2C, and companies that want PIM, DAM, and MDM in one platform.
  • How it connects to Shopify: through Pimcore Datahub and Shopify’s Admin API, using a custom integration or a third-party connector.
  • Strengths: a very flexible data model, open source, and full control over hosting and data.
  • Watch out for: it needs an implementation partner and in-house or partner developers.
  • Pricing model: a free Community Edition, plus paid editions with support and extra features.

Pimcore is a strong choice when Shopify is one channel among many, and your data model is complex: technical attributes, product relationships, several brands or regions. More: Pimcore development services.

2. Akeneo: Best PIM for Shopify Merchandising Teams

  • Best for: merchandising-led brands and retailers with growing catalogs.
  • How it connects to Shopify: Akeneo offers a Shopify app, and partners provide additional connectors.
  • Strengths: an easy enrichment interface, completeness scores, and a large connector marketplace.
  • Watch out for: advanced features, such as richer workflows and asset management, sit in paid editions.
  • Pricing model: a free Community Edition, plus SaaS editions. See our Akeneo pricing guide.

Akeneo suits teams who want a PIM that marketers and merchandisers can use daily, with Shopify as the main channel.

3. Syndigo: Best PIM for Shopify Brands That Also Sell Through Retailers

  • Best for: brands that sell on Shopify and through many retailers and data pools.
  • How it connects to Shopify: through an API integration or a partner connector.
  • Strengths: a large retailer and recipient network, GDSN, and PIM plus MDM.
  • Watch out for: it is best value when syndication to retailers is central to your business.
  • Pricing model: a SaaS subscription, quote-based. See What is Syndigo?

Syndigo makes most sense when Shopify is your direct-to-consumer store, but most revenue comes through retailers that each want product content in their own format. One product record then feeds your store and every retailer.

4. Salsify: Best PIM for Shopify and the Digital Shelf

  • Best for: consumer brands focused on retailers, marketplaces, and the digital shelf.
  • How it connects to Shopify: through an API integration or a partner connector.
  • Strengths: retailer content requirements, syndication, and digital shelf tools.
  • Watch out for: it is less suited to complex B2B data models.
  • Pricing model: a SaaS subscription, quote-based. See Salsify pricing and Salsify alternatives.

Salsify is popular with consumer brands that track how their products look on retailer sites. If your Shopify store is a smaller channel next to Amazon and big-box retailers, it is worth a look.

5. inRiver: Best PIM for Shopify B2B Manufacturers

  • Best for: B2B manufacturers and brands with rich product stories.
  • How it connects to Shopify: through a connector from inRiver’s partners or an API integration.
  • Strengths: an entity-and-link data model and strong product storytelling.
  • Watch out for: an enterprise focus; it can be heavy for a single Shopify store.
  • Pricing model: customizable SaaS plans. See inRiver pricing.

inRiver fits manufacturers who sell through distributors and dealers and also run a Shopify store, often for spare parts or direct sales. Its strength is managing how products relate to each other, and the stories told about them.

6. Plytix: Best PIM for Small Shopify Brands

  • Best for: small and mid-sized Shopify brands that want a PIM quickly.
  • How it connects to Shopify: through its built-in channel integrations.
  • Strengths: quick to start, simple to use, and prices published on its website.
  • Watch out for: limited for complex data models, workflows, and large B2B catalogs.
  • Pricing model: published SaaS plans.

Plytix is often the first PIM a growing Shopify brand buys. Check how it handles your variants, languages, and channels before you commit, because moving to a larger PIM later means another migration.

7. Shopify Apps: Best for a Single Store Without a Separate PIM

  • Best for: single-store brands with simple catalogs.
  • How it connects to Shopify: native, inside Shopify: bulk editors, metafield managers, and translation apps.
  • Strengths: cheap and fast, with no new system to learn.
  • Watch out for: no single source of truth across channels, and limited workflow and governance.
  • Pricing model: monthly app subscriptions.

Apps are the right answer for many small stores. The warning sign is when you start stacking several apps and spreadsheets to do what one PIM would do, and nobody is sure which copy of the data is right.

How to Choose the Best PIM for Shopify

  1. Count your products, variants, attributes, languages, and channels. This decides whether you need a PIM at all, and how powerful it must be.
  2. List where product data comes from: ERP, suppliers, PLM, or spreadsheets. Each source is an integration to plan.
  3. Decide who runs the PIM: merchandisers, a data team, or IT. Pick a platform those people will actually use.
  4. Shortlist two or three options from the table, and ask each vendor to demo with your own products, not their sample data.
  5. Compare total cost: license, implementation, integrations, and the team who runs it. Use the PIM cost calculator for a first estimate, and our PIM RFP template to compare vendors on equal terms.

Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing a PIM for Shopify

  • Choosing on the demo alone. Every PIM looks good with sample data. Ask to see your own products, variants, and languages, and the way they arrive in Shopify.
  • Ignoring the integration. The connector or integration is often where projects slip. Ask exactly what it syncs: variants, metafields, media, translations, several stores.
  • Skipping the data clean-up. A PIM does not fix bad data by itself. Plan time to clean, de-duplicate, and complete product data before go-live; our PIM data migration checklist helps.
  • Buying for today only. If you plan to add marketplaces, B2B, or new countries in the next two years, choose a PIM that can handle them so you don’t have to migrate twice.
  • Forgetting who runs it. A powerful PIM that nobody on the team uses is worse than a simple one people use every day. Budget for training and an owner.

How a PIM Connects to Shopify

Whichever PIM you choose, the integration works similarly. The PIM sends products to Shopify through the Shopify Admin API: products, variants, metafields, media, and translations.

Good integrations send only changes, so updates are fast and don’t hit API limits, and they publish the same product record to multiple stores or markets. Prices and stock usually come from your ERP or order management system rather than the PIM.

See Shopify PIM integration for the details.

What a Shopify PIM Project Includes

Buying the software is the smallest part. A typical project to put a PIM behind Shopify covers six pieces of work:

  1. Data model: product families, attributes, variants, and how they map to Shopify options and metafields.
  2. Data migration: moving and cleaning products from Shopify, spreadsheets, and your ERP into the PIM.
  3. Integrations: PIM-to-Shopify, and usually ERP-to-PIM for SKUs, prices, and stock.
  4. Workflows: who enriches, who approves, and what “complete” means before a product goes live.
  5. Channels: extra Shopify stores, markets, marketplaces, or retailer feeds.
  6. Training and ownership: the team who will run the PIM every day.

Our PIM implementation plan walks through these steps in order.

How Long Does a Shopify PIM Project Take?

A focused first release typically takes 3 to 6 months; larger multi-store and multi-channel programs run in phases over 6 to 12 months or more. Discovery takes a few weeks and gives you a data model, scope, and plan.

Best PIM for Shopify: FAQ

What is the best PIM for a small Shopify store?

For a few hundred products in one store, Shopify apps may be enough. For a growing catalog, look at Plytix or Akeneo.

What is the best PIM for Shopify Plus?

For several stores, markets, and channels, Akeneo, Pimcore, Syndigo, and Salsify are common choices. The right choice depends on catalog complexity and retailer needs.

Does Shopify have a built-in PIM?

No. Shopify manages products for its own store, but it is not a PIM. It has no central workflow, governance, or publishing to other channels.

Can a PIM manage Shopify metafields?

Yes. Map PIM attributes to metafields, and the PIM keeps them complete and in sync.
